Creon Potier: Escape Into Sound

“I don’t know if this is going to be controversial but my sun and my moon are both in Scorpio,” Creon Potier said, “I’m a super empathetic person. I feel things very deeply. I feel like it’s more of a blessing than a curse that I’m an emotionally intuitive person. I lead with my heart on my sleeve and I feel like everything I do is very emotionally driven. This definitely reflects in my music.”

Potier, an electrifying Pop artist based in Los Angeles, said he originally got his start singing in the church choir back home in Houston, Texas.

“Music means everything to me. I don’t know who I would be without it. Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve always had some connection to music. I feel like it’s a lot deeper than just hearing things with your ears. It’s feeling it. It’s relating to it. It’s crying to it. There are all kinds of experiences in your life that you can associate with music.”

Potier would soon transition to more classical music, going on to play trumpet throughout middle and high school. He would also draw inspiration from fellow Houstonian Solange, particularly from the imagery she was able to create through her song “When I Get Home”, which is about their shared hometown.

“I like listening to artists that can really build a world around their project,” Potier said, “On top of the personal connection, I can just feel and hear the world she’s trying to create.”

In addition to Solange, Potier said he appreciates artists that are authentic and express themselves to the fullest through bold visuals and sounds. While artists like Adéla, Slayyyter and Addison Rae are refreshing to Potier, there is one artist that truly stands out for him.

“I’m really inspired by Britney Spears,” Potier said, “She’s probably like my ideal version of a pop star.”

Beyond providing him with vibrant, musical worlds he can escape to, Potier said music also gifted him the confidence and ability to embrace not only his success, but also his failure.

“Music made me fearless, “Potier said,” I absolutely love music. I love creating it and collaborating with other people. It instantly boosts my mood and makes me feel better. It makes me feel at peace.”

Creative Process

“I don’t really have like a 1-2-3 process,” Potier explained, “I really just lead with my emotion and whatever connects with me at the time. This usually shapes and carves out the world I’m trying to build with my music.”

Potier, who describes himself as very “conceptual”, said color plays a major role in his creative process.

“I always start with a color scheme that I want to go for then usually build upon that and the rest kind of follows suit.”

Like many artists, Potier’s creative process isn’t linear. He said he looks to truly embrace his “cringe” and not be afraid to try different ideas, as this is what makes him a unique musician.

“A lot of my projects for so long have been really inspired by a lot of my own real life experiences, whether that be fun times with friends or maybe reflecting on things I did when I was younger. Depression, break-ups, real life experiences that I feel we can all connect to.”
