Local performers brought the house down Saturday at the Roc Da Mic event in Beckley.

The theme was Ladies’ Night and a variety of artists recited poetry, sang songs and rapped verses in an intimate space with sounds provided by DJ Modest. In her careful curation of playlists, DJ Modest said she’s just happy to create and take in the chill vibes.
“I just love music,” DJ Modest said, “As long as nobody yells ‘kill the DJ’, I know I’m good. It’s all about feeling out the crowd.”
Mr. E, The Clozah, C-Steezee, and Bernie were just a few of the local artists who stepped up to rock the mic. DJ Modest said her and other event organizers would love to see more talent come out and showcase their works.
“Anybody’s welcome and you get unlimited access to the mic,” DJ Modest said, “Just show up!”
After initially feeling reluctant, Kita Poetically Yourz decided to get up on stage and share some of her poetry. Kita, a Floridian visiting the area for work, said she felt a sense of relief after performing.
“I was already thinking about going up then I thought ‘Well these people don’t know me’,” Kita said, “After the fact I thought ‘I can’t believe I said that out loud’.”
The Business Spotlight portion of the event featured LEUPHORIQUE.COM creator Kabrea James, who also performed two pieces.
Host Chelle Wilson said she would love to see future events packed to the point that it’s standing room only.
“We’re just trying to promote positivity in our community and show that you don’t have to leave Beckley to have a good time,” Wilson said, “We want this to catch on fire.”
